We are currently attending the T.R.A.F.F.I.C Expo where 400 of the top professionals in Internet Marketing are gathered to discuss the future of domains and their role on the Internet. We will be reporting on the conference in this space, covering new insights from the best minds in the business. So please stay tuned.
Beyond selling domains, we intend to become one of the most interesting and informative domain development sites on the Internet, providing news of our Internet startups as they are launched.
In the meantime please check out our myriad domain categories. You are sure to enjoy perusing the business opportunities and perhaps you'll find a domain to propel your company to success on the Internet!
For the moment we will provide some background and what motivated us to build the collection of domains cataloged in the menu at left.
Internet Locations evolved out of 30 years in print publishing. From launching a small magazine in New Delhi in 1970 to a mini magazine empire in Hawaii through the eighties and nineties, we have been driven by a desire to inform, inspire and make a living in visual communications. Hence the genesis of Internet Locations, designed for a 21st century culture of innovation.
Back in 1997 we began by registering two domains, not for speculation but as business concepts for a couple sites we thought we would launch to test the waters: Salsas.com, a gourmet site and MauiWowies.com, a calendar featuring our collection of gorgeous Hawaiian Cover Girls!
One thing led to another and we began thinking of other ideas that could lift us out of the tree-consuming print world into the emerging world of electronic publishing.
Now many of our ideas seem prescient. Demographics and technology have changed at the fastest pace in history and we feel we are in the right place at the right time with our thoughtfully diverse domain portfolio.
Our library of domains spans the mediasphere. It is organized into categories that define how we live, love, work, travel, communicate, have fun, make money and more. Every domain is a potential off ramp from the Information Superhighway, channeling traffic to your server, your site and your bank account.
We call InternetLocations.com an incubator because its premise is to conceive, nurture and "hatch" ideas. Every one of our domains has a web site concept embodied in the raison d'etre of its registration.
Most are designed to become e-commerce sites but you will see some that are designed for donation to charitable non-profit organizations who support our favorite causes. If you see your charity's name here please contact us!
As we moved from print to virtual media we realized that every domain is in fact a piece of real estate in the vast landscape of cyberspace. As Bill Gates proclaimed, "Domains have and will continue to go up in value faster than any other commodity EVER known to man."
Like most properties, a domain is an investment whose value is determined by how much money you can make from it. If you have $100,000 sitting around, how can you multiply that capital? Put it in a nice secure CD at 4%? Buy stocks and hope they go up? Trust it to a Mutual Fund? Buy an apartment building and rent it out?
These are good examples for varying degrees of risk tolerance. But where else on earth can you buy something for $10 and sell it for a million dollars? Such was the opportunity in domains if you were lucky enough to register them ten years ago.
However, today's domain business is another story. Almost any good domain you can think up is taken. It may be live as an established site, for sale at a Domain Reseller or one of millions parked in "Hit Farms" around the world.
Either way, the good ones are hard to get. This supply and demand has created a huge domain market and, in some cases, very inflated prices. But, when you think about it, is paying $7,000,000 for Business.com really too much? Look at their site. They are the definitive portal to listing businesses all over the United States. A database was likely their original business model. Now, add in the unexpected ad-click revenue revolution pioneered by Overture and iGoogle and it's not unreasonable to assume Business.com can make $7 million PER YEAR!
And so it is with all good domains, albeit at varying degrees of market penetration. Wise marketers know that securing the right "top of mind" domain can make a big difference in attracting and retaining customers.
FORBES Magazine, in a year 2000 article predicted:
"The Internet is a tsunami. You can either retreat or jump on the wave, but staying still means you'll drown. You should be rethinking every piece of your business. Bite the bullet and buy the right domain name!"
Back in 1999 we did not imagine the tremendous potential to monetize a domain simply by parking it. Nor did we expect domains to sell for more than a million dollars apiece! But we did imagine some pretty good business ideas, valuable e-commerce concepts for which we own domains targeting very specific categories of consumer needs worldwide.
